Practicing Gratitude in Paris!

I Am Living In Paris!

I said this phrase over and over to myself this morning. I said it as I smelled the wonderful, fuschia peonies on my desk. I said it as I walked home from my corner boulangerie with a warm croissant aux amandes in my hand.

I say it over and over not just because I’m trying to pinch myself to see if this is just a dream, but also because saying it out loud is a form of gratitude.  Sure it sounds easy to practice gratitude in Paris, right?  With the art, the food, the romance and the passion; gratitude flows freely.  As someone who strongly believes in the power of gratitude, I know it is easiest to practice when things are going well.  I also know it is most helpful when things are hard.  There is something magical about it. Just as love begets more love and happiness allows or creates more happiness, I find that the more I am grateful, the more reasons I have to be grateful.

Gratitude is a wonderful lens that allows you to see the good in your life.  It can be practiced by yourself (by writing a daily list or just thinking about things for which you are grateful).  It can also be practiced in your relationship (it’s very hard to fight about things or take your partner for granted when you are consciously practicing gratitude together).  You can be grateful for large things (living in Paris) or for small things (a glass of cold water).

Here is what I am grateful for today –

  • Peonies
  • Chandeliers (even when only 2 of the 6 bulbs work)
  • Last night’s dinner with friends
  • Nighttime thunderstorms
  • Free wifi in my apartment
  • Phone calls with friends who are on the other side of the globe
  • Standing inches away from major works of art…and feeling moved and humbled by those works of art

What’s on your gratitude list?
